San Diego Fort is a short walk from the church, perched on a hill that overlooks the harbor.  Originally built in 1616, then rebuilt in its present form following an immense earthquake in 1776, the fort was the staging area for the loading and unloading of the Manila Fleet, served to protect the lucrative trade link from Dutch and English pirates. The fort is a classic five-point bastion enclosed by moat and where a fascinating museum is housed.

Pie de la Cuesta and Coyuca Lagoon is located ten kilometers west of the city and is loved for its country, palm-lined beach and dreamy sunsets.  The nearby lagoon is an exotic setting famous for its tropical vegetation, wildlife, and tiny islands.  If ever you get tired from the busy streets of the downtown area, take a bus or a taxi to this open stretch of Pacific Ocean beach, resting between the crashing Pacific Ocean on one side, and the picturesque Coyuca Lagoon on the other.  The main feature of this awesome place is its flaming tropical sunsets where you can just grab a hammock, order a cool refreshing coconut gin specialty, and just relax. 

Paradise on Condesa Beach is one of Acapulco attractions which feature bungee jumping and full-service beach club.  The Papagayo Park is a fifty-two acre playland and one of the best parks in Mexico.  This park has plenty of carnival rides, Manila galleon replica, magnificent aviary, and winding tree-lined paths which is great for family fun.  Puerto Marques and Revolcadero Beach are Acapulco attractions that should not be missed. Acapulco Spring Break

Although it feels like spring break in Acapulco year round, during March the city changes into a party paradise with Acapulco spring break vacationers. Acapulco spring break starts from the last week of February and continues through the month of March. This five weeks of spring seems to be the city’s craziest times, starting from week one’s “full of fun on the edge of crazy” atmosphere with typical party craziness, sometimes out of control, till the fifth week.  However, most of the students and visitors are only out to party, dance, and drink the night away and the city still keeps its safety and order.

If you’re planning an Acapulco spring break vacation, you can either get a package through an agency, usually on your campus, or for more independence and flexibility, you can do you own reservations and choose a favorite club every night.  The most famous Acapulco spring break hotels are Hotel Copacabana, Crowne Plaza, Hyatt Regency, and Fiesta Americana. However, if you’re looking for something a little less expensive but still nice, the Romano Palace is a good choice.  Reserving well ahead of time before your arrival is a must to avoid any problems.

During spring breaks, the most popular discos in Acapulco include Palladium, Mandara, El Alebrije, Disco beach, and Baby‘O.  All throughout March these discos are jam-packed and showing up by 11:00 is advisable to beat the crowd.  The Paladium is one of the most popular Acapulco discos that feature an excellent atmosphere, service and view.  If you’re in this disco don’t miss the silver fire dancer at 4:00am.  This disco is overly crowded during spring breaks so you may want to put ‘waiting’ on your vocabulary.  The Mandara is another disco which is in the prime location in Las Brisas, just a short walk from the Paladium and other restaurants. The club is very nice suited for couples and groups of four because of its layout which is a stadium with lots of tables and bars at the back.  This night club is definitely elegant and beautiful for enjoying a date or being seen in the elite crowd.

Acapulco Mexico

Acapulco Mexico is one of the most famous tourist destinations in the world.  It is located in the state of Guerrero on Mexico’s western coast that borders the Pacific Ocean. To the north between the airport and Acapulco Bay is the Puerto marques area which is a peaceful bay.  It was of no interest to developers for years but is now the site of the gigantic Acapulco Diamante resort and residential development.  And last but not the least, is the spectacular Acapulco Bay with mountain-framed natural harbor that competes with Hong Kong and the Rio de Janeiro for natural exquisiteness.  A main road descends from the steep cliffs of the bay’s southern end that becomes the coastal Avenida Miguel Alemán or known as the Costera.  This area is the center of Acapulco’s resort strip and dwelling to almost all of Acapulco’s high-rise hotels, dining, shopping, and non-stop nightlife.  The Costera goes on further to the north along the bay toward Old Acapulco and the antique but partially renovated downtown area.

Acapulco H.E.A.T

Acapulco H.E.A.T was a syndicated television series, Hemisphere Emergency Action Team (H.E.A.T), which was a specialist group based in Acapulco Mexico recruited to fight a secret war on terrorists.  The TV series however, was short-lived which had the original run in September 28, 1993 till June 5, 1999.

The show primarily started only one season, from 1993-94, but was brought back for a second season in 1996 with almost a new cast. The second season was created for distribution in Europe although also aired in the U.S. in 1998.  There were forty eight episodes made between the two seasons.

The series’ opening episode was about Hunter Coddington played by Catherine Oxenberg, whose role was a former M16 operative who teams up with a former CIA agent Mike Savage played by Brendan Kelly, forms the H.E.A.T team. 

The Acapulco H.E.A.T team is a group of specialist financed by the government and hired to fight against international terrorism.  The team operates throughout the Caribbean and around the world through an unusual cover of being the owners and models of a fashion company specializing in beach wear.  The show had the glamorous side of sexy women, the beach, and the action behind each episode.

The second season of Acapulco H.E.A.T featured the team being assigned in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.  The only cast members who remained from the first season were Michael Worth and Alison Armitage.  The Acapulco H.E.A.T second season was change to the team no longer being funded by the government, but by a private sector.

The original casts of Acapulco H.E.A.T were:

Ashley Hunter-Coddington, played by Catherine Oxenberg, as a  former British M16 operative, founded the team and is one of the leaders, posing as an undercover photographer for their made-up beachwear agency;

Mike Savage, played by Brendan Kelly, as a former CIA agent and co-founder and leader of the team, also posing as another photographer for the agency;

Catherine Avery Pascal, played by Alison Armitage, as a sexy ex-burglar and poses as one of the models of the agency;

Brett played by Spencer Rochfort, as a handsome young man working undercover for the agency;

Krissie Valentine played by Holly Floria, as a sexy computer expert who provides the team with important information for their missions and poses as an undercover model of the agency;

Marcos played by Randy Vasquez as a former Mexican cab driver;

Tommy Chase played by Michael Worth who was the only other actor to be cast for the second season;

Arthur Small played by Graham Heywood as an uptight guy working mostly for logistics of the mission;

Claudio played by Fabio as the owner of the hotel where the headquarters of the team was;

Mr. Smith played by John Vernon as a character seen only through video link and a government agent who assigns the team of their missions. 

The cast of the second season of Acapulco H.E.A.T only retained two of the actors from the first season, Alison Armitage and Michael Worth, and added two other characters Nicole Bernard (Lydie Denier) and Joanna Barnes (Christa Sauls).

Acapulco Buses and Taxis

Getting around Acapulco is actually not that hard because of various types of local transportation.  Acapulco buses and taxis are some of them, although they may not be very comfortable at times but they are generally safe.  For first-time tourists to Acapulco, always know the rule of thumb or understand the “Right of Way” in Mexico when going around the city as it may just save your life.  The rule of thumb in Mexico is always the larger object, vehicle or human, has the right of way.  So if you’re crossing the street and looking at a big truck coming your way, never think that the driver will give way for pedestrians trying to outrun them in crossing. So always be careful when crossing the streets of this bustling city.

Acapulco taxis vary from blue and white VW taxis, to yellow and white taxis, to tourist taxis which are also blue and white but not VW.  The blue and white VW taxis are about as many in the city as there are other cars, and one can get them on the main street, La Costera, at any day or hour.  Very few taxis in Acapulco have meters so always settle the fare before you get in.  One way to estimate a “fair” fare is the enormous flagpole in from of Papagayo Park which is about midway around the bay.  If your trip starts or ends on either one side of that landmark, about twenty to twenty-five pesos is what the fare should be. The longer trips that pass the flagpole will cost about forty pesos.  Most trips to or from Las Brisas, the airport, or Acapulco Diamante may cost as much as two hundred pesos or more.  The yellow and white taxis is a “colectivo” taxi which travels back and forth along La Costera and costs 10 pesos per person, longer travels may add more cost.

The usual Acapulco buses are in blue and white and come with the words “Costera” on the side.  Riding within the city in Acapulco buses will cost four pesos.  Rides in buses may be quite bumpy, hot, and sometimes crowded, so try to get a seat away from the sun.  There are other blue and white Acapulco buses that are non-Costera but they can be very slow and take detours.  Acapulco buses usually run until 10pm, sometimes even 11pm.

There are also air-conditioned yellow or beige buses that travel along La Costera and cost five pesos but are sometimes harder to find than the ordinary ones.  They are usually more recommendable but most often the AC is broken or they’re too crowded creating a situation similar to an oven because of the windows being closed.  Playing safe would be taking a peek inside and making sure that you can feel the air conditioning working.

There are several bus stations that are all near downtown, mostly on Avenida Cuauhtémoc, which is a couple of blocks from the beachfront drive of the Costera.

Acapulco Beach

Acapulco is a very lively city and one of the best places for vacation. It’s often called ‘the city that never sleeps’ as there are just endless exciting things to do whether it be night or day.  The theme in this thrilling city seems to be ‘party all night’ and ‘play on the beach all day’.  Acapulco is a place that gives travelers various choices when it comes to beaches. The whole bay of the city is lined with beaches where restaurants put out umbrellas, tables and chairs in the sand so visitors can enjoy food and drink right at the waters edge.

Playa Diamante and Playa Revolcadero are well- known Acapulco beaches located in the south part of the town, near the airport which is an area of major development.  Some great resorts are located here and four of Acapulco’s golf courses as well.  Various water sports activities, ultra light airplanes, waverunners, and horseback riding are offered here.  This long stretch of beach is open to high waves and is a great surf area for surfers as well as collecting shells and beachcombing. Just be careful though if you want to swim in this beach and you’re not an expert swimmer.

Playa Puerto Marques is an Acapulco beach which is a favorite among locals.  This fairly large bay has an entire beach that is lined with tin roofed restaurants that serve fresh seafood, tropical drinks, and cold beer with prices usually below than those of Acapulco proper.  This beach is busy every day and is overly crowded on weekends, as its calm waters are great for swimming and water sports when there is room.

Playa Icacos is located towards the southern end of the bay, which is lined with high-rise hotels and condominiums.  This calm Acapulco beach offers all of the local watersports directly from the shore, and this are is also the abode of the giant CiCi water park, very close to many discos.

Playa Condesa is an Acapulco beach nestled in the heart of “Zona Dorado” or “The Golden Zone”, and is one of the most renowned city beaches with a lot of beachfront restaurants and activities.  Much of the “pre” nightlife action originates in this beach which is very close to many of the better restaurants and shopping centers that gives an option for other activities when one gets bored of the beach scene.  Bungee jumping always draws a lot of crowd in this area, as onlookers watch brave jumpers get dipped in the giant swimming pool one hundred sixty five feet in the air.

Playa Caleta and Playa Caletilla are two small Acapulco beach situated away from tourist traffic.  These small beaches are combinations of great atmosphere, calm, waters, and beachfront restaurants that serve some of the most incredible reasonably priced seafood.  Most of these restaurants are shaded by giant trees adding a different feel of the beach.  In the center of these two beaches is the Mundo Marino aquarium and fun center.  These great family beaches get very crowded during weekends.

Mayan Palace Acapulco

Mayan Palace Acapulco lives up to its name, as a five-star ‘palace’ of two hundred private acres presenting a magical world of limitless luxury and endless entertainment.  The Mayan Palace Acapulco is an expansive haven located on Playa Diamante, one of Acapulco’s most attractive beaches, and just about ten minutes from the airport.

The daredevil act was once a fisherman skill. It is a practice in freeing snagged lines by taking a high dive that should take them beneath the water as fast as the dive can accommodate. This would ensure they have plenty of time to do the things needed underwater.
